Basic Computer Repair for Beginners

So you wake up one morning, grab a cup of coffee, and fire up your computer to find your once prized piece of technology has betrayed you, so what do you do? Cursing and throwing things aside, if your reading this I'm guessing that your interested in attempting to diagnose and possibly repair it yourself. In this article, I will show you how to go about solving the mystery of the misbehaving computer. A note of caution is due here, If your computer is under warranty from whomever you bought it from its best to let them handle it. Any time you open up your computer case and mess with its insides chances are you are voiding the warranty so you will be stuck fixing or paying for repairs yourself.

The first thing you need to do is narrow the field of possibilities down. So ask yourself, What is this machine doing that it shouldn't be? What is it not doing that it should be? If, for example, its not booting up properly but it is displaying a loading screen correctly then there is little need to worry about your graphics card. To troubleshoot properly you need to get familiar with the different components of your setup. Following is a list of basic parts and their function. This is only a basic list of functions and by no means is is a complete list of possible errors, but I hope it will get you headed in the right direction.

  1. Motherboard. Sometimes called the mainboard, this is like the nervous system of your computer. It connects all the other parts together and helps them work together properly. Almost any hardware related issue can be caused by the motherboard, and its the most time consuming replacement, so its best to rule out other possible causes before worrying about this.

Your motherboard is also where your BIOS is stored. BIOS is basically a set of instructions telling your computer what to do before loading your operating system. It starts up all the individual parts along with the fans, lights, ect. If your computer is not starting up the operating system, or OS, it can mean a failure of one part or another. Lucky for us, BIOS can give you a hint to whats going. If you listen to your computer when you start it up you will usually hear a single beep long before your OS shows up to take over. That is called "posting" which is BIOS way of saying it thinks all is functioning as expected at that point. If instead you hear a series of beeps, BIOS is telling you something is wrong and what it thinks it is. There are several different brands of BIOS and the meaning of the codes vary between them. The best thing you can do for yourself is go to the manufacturer of your computers website and find out what version of BIOS you have long before you have a problem. Then look up that BIOS with your favorite search engine. I would recommend writing down, or printing out the different beep codes ahead of time so if something does go wrong you have the information handy.

  1. CPU. This is the main brain of your system. The CPU or "chip" controls the thinking of your machine. It is what takes information from software and translates it into the interface we see on the screen. If the CPU is bad the system will most likely not load its Operating System at all.
  2. Power Supply. This is the part responsible for taking the power from your wall, dividing it up and sending the correct voltages to all the other components of your computer. If your having intermittent issues, usually more frequently when you are doing more with your machine, this may be the culprit. To test if your power supply is bad, or inadequate, download and install voltage monitoring software from either your motherboard manufacturer, the maker of the power supply, or any number of 3rd party sites. The good programs will show you the optimum power load for each component in a list form and then show you what its actually getting. The power for any given part of your PC should be steady, so watch for any large jumps or discrepancies in the voltage.
  3. Hard Drive. This is the long term memory of your system. Its what stores your OS, data, programs, and just about anything else you "save" on your machine. Symptoms of a failing hard drive are random boot up errors, frequent program crashes, lost data, or any number of Window system errors. Most hard drives still work on a spinning magnetic tape, so listen when your starting and running your computer. If you hear a whirling highs pitch noise accompanied by any of the previously listed errors its a good sign that your hard drive is failing. These usually go out gradually, although not always, so if you pay attention you can save yourself some headaches by catching it early enough to still be able to back up most of your data.
  4. RAM. Your RAM or memory, is your short term memory/brain of the system. It temporary stores basic data and tasks that are done frequently so that your computer does not have to refer to the hard drive all the time. Having enough RAM, and it being properly functioning is essential to running the larger more demanding programs. The biggest symptom of dying RAM is frequent program crashes and errors. Sometimes it will only crash to the error reporting stage, other times it will randomly reboot your computer. If you suspect your memory is going bad, there are several free programs to test it. I would recommend downloading Memtest 86 or Prime and following the instructions there.
  5. GPU. Your GPU, or graphics card, is what tells your monitor how and what to display. Depending on your setup it can be either a standalone card, or an integrated card, which means its part of your motherboard. If your GPU is failing you will often times see artifacts, off colored pixelated symbols and letters, popping up at random times on your screen. It also can result in no video at all. If your having video related issues, chances are this is the culprit. The simplest way of testing if this is the problem is to plug your computer into another monitor that you know works. If it does the same thing on two monitors this is most likely the problem. If your using a card type GPU and your motherboard has an integrated one available you can also remove the GPU and switch to using the integrated chipset to test your monitor if no other way is available.
  6. Sound Card. Just like the graphics card this can come either as integrated chip set on your motherboard or as a stand alone card. This ones simple, if your having no audio, and you know your computer speakers are working chances are the sound card is the problem. Just like the GPU you can switch from using a card to the integrated to test your other audio components.

Thats it for the basic parts, so i will leave you here with a few tips. If you have recently changed any parts of your computer or taken it in for upgrades or repairs, that is the best place to start. Often times amateurs will install a shiny new part without thinking about how it will interact with the rest of the machine. If you install a new graphics card for example, aside from it needing to be compatible with your motherboard, you also have to make sure that the power supply can put out enough juice for it. You also need enough fans to cool off all the parts of your machine as high temps can cause errors, and eventually complete failure of any component.

Visually inspect your computer. Are the lights coming on as normal? Are the fans spinning? Are any wires or cards hanging loose or disconnected? Anything you can see or hear that is abnormal can be a clue to whats going on. If your fan on your CPU is clogged with ten pounds of dog hair, you may quickly solve your problems by removing the hair allowing proper cooling of the chipset.

Google is your friend, or at least some search engine should be. Often times quickly typing your problem into a search engine will bring up a slew of people with the exact issue you have, sometimes with a solution that someone else already figured out. If not, hey at least you tried. Id rather waste time typing a five word phrase into google and find nothing than to spend three hours figuring out something myself that would have been a five minute fix had i bothered searching. If you suspect a certain part of your computer is the cause, try including the brand name along with the part number or name with the search.

Remember this guide is only meant to cover basic hardware failures, for any possible hardware problem there are most likely ten possible software issues. Virus, driver errors, and OS errors are just a few of the things that can turn a completely functioning computer into a complete headache overnight. I would quickly quadruple the size of this article if i started covering all the different possible problems with software and as its all very case specific so i will not go into great detail here. I will say ,however, if you have recently updated or changed any drivers, or had any problems with virus, you may want to look into that before you start blaming hardware.

Know your limitations. Its great that you want to learn about your computer, but knowledge can be dangerous, or at least lead to dangerous actions. If your computer has no warranty and you feel confident that you are capable of fixing it then by all means proceed at your own risk. If your in doubt, ask someone who knows what they are doing. Just because you know how electricity works it doesn't mean you should rewire your house by yourself. There is a reason people pay others to fix their PC for them. A mistake can be very costly and render that brand new $600 processor you bought into a worthless paperweight very quickly. So do not be afraid to call a pro if you feel your in over your head.

Knowledge is power. Even if you do not feel comfortable fixing your computer yourself, having a general idea of what is wrong with it before heading off to a repair shop can be very helpful. In a perfect world you would take your machine in for repairs, they would fix it, and you would be on your way a happy customer, but we all know the real world does not always work like this. Knowing the terms and functions of the basic parts of your PC can help you avoid being overcharged or otherwise scammed out of your hard earned money.…

Sports Injuries & the Road to Recovery

Anyone who has invested time, energy, and resources into an athletic career knows that risk of injury is a part of the game. Though trainers, coaches, and sports doctors undoubtedly do their best to minimize this risk, it is never completely eliminated. Soccer player David Beckham's recent injury to his Achilles' tendon put his future with the World Cup at stake, Lindsey Von nearly lost her chance to compete in the 2010 Olympics, and Da'sean Butler had to end his college career with a knee injury that happened in the fourth quarter of the NCAA semifinals.

So how does an athlete respond well to injuries that could potentially end their career, and shatter their dreams? In the immediate moment, many athletes feel anger, guilt, and denial. While West Virginia's Coach was trying to comfort Butler after his injury, Butler was apologizing. He wanted to be there for his team, especially at this crucial moment at the very end of his college career. Having gone through a trampoline accident myself, I know that it's a scary place to be, but if some important steps are taken, many athletes are able to overcome their injuries and recover from their setbacks.

Education – An athlete needs to be well educated with honest and accurate facts about his or her injury, the healing process, and what effect it will have on his or her career. Education is power, and knowing the truth will help the athlete and coach to set realistic and attainable goals. If it's going to be a long road, the athlete needs to know that, so he or she can prepare mentally and physically. Through a custom training plan, an athlete can stay in shape and reach goals more easily.

Awareness of Psychological Effects – A serious injury can be devastating not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. When one's future changes in a moment, feelings of sadness or depression can set in. An athlete may feel like they let their team or coach down, or may be afraid of getting injured again. Being aware of the possibility that these feeling might be present, and being prepared to respond with any necessary stress management training can make all the difference.

Support and Encouragement – An athlete who has been injured needs support more than ever. One of the best ways to get this support is to stay with the coach and team. Who could understand the feelings of loss better than your own teammates? The team most likely wants to help get an athlete back in shape to compete, so making sure that one doesn't get separated from the team is extremely important. This can be an encouragement for the athlete to continue his or her athletic lifestyle, and ultimately make the transition back into the sports scene that much easier.

Though serious sports injuries are truly devastating, they can be overcome, and can make an athlete stronger physically, and mentally. As the saying goes, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." If the athlete and his or her supporting staff are willing to make an effort to come back and win, they can, and they will.

Protecting Your Computer is Protecting Your Identity

Spyware is a parasite in your computer that does just what the names suggests: spies on you as you browse the web. It records the sites you go on, our keystrokes, and your personal information. Many advertisers use spyware to track which websites you visit to send you targeted ads in the form of annoying pop-ups. The biggest danger of spyware by far is collecting personal information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and bank account numbers. It's very easy to get and very hard to get rid of. Some free software you can download may help you get rid of some of the spyware on your computer, but may not get it all.

Spyware uses hidden processes to not only slow your computer and serve you pop-ups, but it can also disable your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, leaving you all the more vulnerable to all the latest infections out there. Spyware is extremely hard to get rid of because it installs itself in so many folders that if you try to uninstall it, it can reinstall from other files.

Anti-spyware programs combat spyware in two different ways. Some provide real time protection against the installation of spyware on your computer. While your surf the net, the programs checks all incoming and outgoing signals to prevent spyware from getting into your computer. It blocks anything that may be suspicious. Other programs search your hard drive to remove any spyware that may already be there. You can schedule periodic scans of your computer to make sure it's clean of spyware.

You should always make backups of important information on your computer. Putting them on a DVD or remote hard drive will protect the information from being corrupted, remove it from you computer's hard drive if necessary, and won't be accidentally lost. You should also set up a firewall for your computer. A firewall acts as a barrier between your computer and the internet. It only allows information in from trusted sources. You can buy a hard drive version of a firewall or install a software version. Some browsers come with one built in, but you may still want to buy a more advanced one for your personal security.

You need to do everything possible in order to protect yourself from spyware. Identity theft is very real, and for some spyware programs, not very hard to do at all. Protecting yourself with an anti-spyware program ensures that you will not become a victim, and it also keeps your computer running smoothly. Spyware uses the host computer's memory space to run, slowing the computer by a lot if infected.…

Sports and Activities for Young Kids

As a mother of five youngsters, I want them to enjoy their childhood and be active. Getting involved in activities and sports is a time commitment and can sometimes be costly. When our 8 and 6-year-olds expressed interest in playing soccer, we decided it was time to find a team for them to play on. Having previously been involved in a rec league with our oldest two years ago, we weren’t sure we wanted to go that route again.

Many rec leagues are really great and offer reasonably priced sports for area kids to be involved with. Our daughter really enjoyed her rec league but it was a bit more competitive than our 5 year old (at the time) was ready for. She would often begin crying on the field if she missed the ball, and scored 2 goals on their own team the last game of the season. Fortunately she had no clue, and was just so thrilled she scored! I do not have anything bad to say about rec sports, but if your child is not very competitive, or maybe very new to a sport, I think going through leagues like Upward first, is a really awesome choice.

Upward is a national Christian organization, using local churches to facilitate their objectives. It’s a place where kids can learn to play together as a team, learn a new sport (or sharpen skills) and also hear mini Bible lessons during both practices and games. We have found it to be a really neat group and a great blessing to our family.

A program like Upward is a great place to start if you feel like your child may be ready to play team sports. If your child shows real interest and ability in the sport chosen, that’s a great time to decide to move on to a league with more of a time commitment and competitiveness. The next step would be either through your local recreation department or a travel team or higher level team depending on the sport. Whatever the case may be, teaching kids to work together as a team and to get some fun exercise is never a bad thing!

Organizing Computer Files to Cut Computer Clutter

Many home business owners maintain very organized computer filing systems. They're able to find their computer files with just a few keystrokes or clicks of the mouse. Other home business owners aren't as organized. They just save their documents to the desktop or documents folder without having any real organizational system for their computer files. This can lead to lost files, accidental deletion of important files, and an increase in the amount of time it takes to find files on your computer. This article will give you tips on how to organize computer files so that you don't need to spend time wading through groups of files every time you need to locate a document.

Cleaning Computer Files: Before You Begin

Before you begin cleaning computer files, make sure you have enough time set aside to make a dent in what needs to be done. Depending on how many files you have, it may take anywhere from fifteen minutes to several hours to get them under control. If you have a big project ahead of you, break it down into several short sessions to make organizing computer files more manageable. You may also want to jot down some ideas for file categories before you begin creating folders and moving files.

Organizing Computer Files: Cleaning Up Desktop Icons

If you're not paying attention when you install new programs or download files from your e-mail, you could end up with dozens of unused desktop icons that cause computer clutter and make files hard to find. Start your mission to organize your computer files by reviewing all of your desktop icons. If they are shortcuts that you never use, you can delete them. If they are documents that you downloaded, move them to the appropriate folder. Pictures could go in your My Pictures folder and general documents could go in your My Documents Folder. When you're finished, you'll have a clean desktop that will motivate you to continue with organizing computer files.

Cleaning Computer Files: Develop a File System

When you're cleaning computer files, you need to come up with a filing system that works for you. There are a lot of great articles about computer filing systems, but they will not do you any good if you are unable to stick with them. Think about how you typically access files. If you have a home business, you may want to have folders for client work, expenses, and personal projects. Create new folders for each of these topics so that you can easily file your documents.

Organizing Computer Files: Renaming Documents

Sometimes, downloaded documents take on funny names such as ~111.temp.doc. Your files should all be named so that you can quickly find what you are looking for when you search for a file. Take some time to rename your documents according to the file system you set up. A file formerly named "invoice.doc" might be changed to include your client's name or the date of the invoice. Once you have gone through all of your documents and renamed them as necessary, you can move on to the next step in learning how to organize computer files.

Cleaning Computer Files: Filing

Now all that's left for you to do is to move all of your renamed files into your new folders. Client information would go into a folder marked "Clients." Spreadsheets that detail your business expenses, along with scanned copies of expense receipts, would go into the folder marked "Expenses." Continue filing all of your documents until they are all properly categorized.

Once you have cleaned your computer files, resist the temptation to just file your documents anywhere. File them in the proper folders as you save or download them, and you will save a lot of time and frustration when you need to find important documents.…

Classical Music for Spring

Classical Music for Spring - YouTube

Spring: It’s when the world comes back to life. The frost of winter is shaken off and nature blossoms in the warming temperatures. Masters of the Classical music era have tried to capture the magic and beauty of spring and have produced some amazing results. Here is a look at five magnificent examples of Classical era compositions that usher in spring with much due excitement and anticipation.

“Spring” by Antonio Vivaldi

There are few instrumental compositions that can sum up the season of spring better than Antonio Vivaldi did with his “Four Seasons Suite.” In “Spring,” the feeling of the world coming back to life after months of bitter cold and frost is present and undeniable. This song creates imagery of lush fields, meadows, flowers opening the warmth of a spring breeze. The “Spring” portion of the “Four Seasons Suite” is nothing short of spectacular.

“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach

Another song that beautifully evokes images of spring is “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach. Light, airy and upbeat, “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” has an ethereal quality to it, and elevates the listener to a more peaceful state. Few composers could compare to the majesty of Johann Sebastian Bach’s majestic gift, and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” is just one example of why.

“Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg

Often called the “Morning Song,” “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg is a very well-known composition thanks to television and films that have used it as background music. This song easily evokes imagery of a sun rising over a country town, animals rising from a long night’s sleep and the world coming to life after a long slumber.

“Air” by Johann Sebastian Bach

Another magnificent song by Johann Sebastian Bach that easily evokes emotions of spring is the composition “Air.” There could be no more perfect title for this composition. “Air” is a beautiful composition, played with gentle ease, the strings sing with longing and it is a delight to listen to.

“The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Straus II

“The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Straus II is another well-known composition that has remained popular in modern culture thanks to the film and television industries. Similar to the other compositions noted above, “The Blue Danube Waltz” has a light and airy feel to it – perfect for the season of spring.

Healthy Equations

There are more numbers in fitness than you can shake your booty at.

There are calorie counts, reps and sets, intervals, days per week, scales and weight. It's daunting, but may I introduce a few new equations?

Have you heard of the 90/10 rule? This rule states that, when it comes to weight loss, 90% of the work is accomplished through diet and only 10% is achieved by exercise. There isn't a lot of documented research on this principle, but plenty of experiential evidence. Think about it…

If you eat a Big Mac with cheese, about 700 calories, it will take approximately a 6-7 mile run to burn off those calories. A Big Mac occasionally is absolutely OK, but if you routinely eat a fast food, or unhealthy diet, you will need to practically live in the gym to achieve your weight loss goals.

Who wants to live in the gym anyway? There is so much life to live and time to spend with family and friends and enjoying hobbies. Is a fast food diet really worth the extra work it demands to lose weight? Additionally, no amount of exercise will convert French fries, soda or Snickers into quality, energy efficient nutrients for your body. Even if your tongue isn't, your cells are crying out for fresh fruit, whole grains and veggies. I promise they will reward you if you feed them well.

So, we've established that 90% of weight loss is diet. What about the last 10%? Have you ever heard of skinny-fat? I know you've seen it. This is the "lucky" person with "skinny-genes" who has never attempted a pushup. Her arms dangle from her shirt sleeves like green beans. Or, it's the successful Weight Watchers graduate who happily hit her target weight but wonders why she isn't toned and can't see her triceps.

The final 10% will bring out your biceps, sculpt your shoulders and whittle your middle. You'll never see the lines and definition you desire with out a pushup, squat or jog. If you want 100% success you have to put the two together! The guaranteed success is worth the work!

Is It Normal to Be Superstitious About Sports?

Many people believe in superstitions, and even more people believe in them and don't even know it. Superstitions are a routine or something you follow, because you believe doing that will affect the outcome of something. This is extremely prevalent in sports of all kinds. Many people will wear the same shirt, or sit in the same chair during game time, or even watch the game with the same people all because they are superstitious. They believe that by doing all of this it will help in the outcome of the game they are watching. Is this right however? Is it normal for people to act this way, or is this behavior just lucrative, and crazy?

Like I said before almost everyone does something that makes them superstitious. Some hockey fans have to be wearing the same hat every game, or they feel that their team will not win. Some football fans have to wear the same shirt or even the same pair of underwear for every game. Is this type of behavior normal? The answer is yes, but the real question is does all of this superstitious activity actually do anything. Obviously it doesn't affect the outcome of a game, because the shirt someone wears has nothing to do with the actual game, but is this actually a good thing?

I believe that being superstitious is absolutely a good thing; in fact I think it is a great thing. If being superstitious is what attracts fans to the game, and makes people watch the game then it can only be a great thing. Now obviously anyone can watch the game and not have to be doing something special, but it is this behavior that makes the game a lot better for some people. They enjoy acting the way the do, because they believe that in some way they are helping. They are helping, because they are supporting their team, but that is as far as it goes.

Being superstitious is something that really doesn't make sense, unless you're the person. The acts that you may perform over and over because you believe it will help your team, obviously do nothing. The only thing it does is make you watch and enjoy the game. If that is what it takes, then so be it. If that is what someone needs to do to be able to watch the game and have fun then that is excellent, because for the fans that is what it is all about. Watching, and having fun while supporting your favorite team.…
