Protecting Your Computer is Protecting Your Identity

Spyware is a parasite in your computer that does just what the names suggests: spies on you as you browse the web. It records the sites you go on, our keystrokes, and your personal information. Many advertisers use spyware to track which websites you visit to send you targeted ads in the form of annoying pop-ups. The biggest danger of spyware by far is collecting personal information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, and bank account numbers. It's very easy to get and very hard to get rid of. Some free software you can download may help you get rid of some of the spyware on your computer, but may not get it all.

Spyware uses hidden processes to not only slow your computer and serve you pop-ups, but it can also disable your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, leaving you all the more vulnerable to all the latest infections out there. Spyware is extremely hard to get rid of because it installs itself in so many folders that if you try to uninstall it, it can reinstall from other files.

Anti-spyware programs combat spyware in two different ways. Some provide real time protection against the installation of spyware on your computer. While your surf the net, the programs checks all incoming and outgoing signals to prevent spyware from getting into your computer. It blocks anything that may be suspicious. Other programs search your hard drive to remove any spyware that may already be there. You can schedule periodic scans of your computer to make sure it's clean of spyware.

You should always make backups of important information on your computer. Putting them on a DVD or remote hard drive will protect the information from being corrupted, remove it from you computer's hard drive if necessary, and won't be accidentally lost. You should also set up a firewall for your computer. A firewall acts as a barrier between your computer and the internet. It only allows information in from trusted sources. You can buy a hard drive version of a firewall or install a software version. Some browsers come with one built in, but you may still want to buy a more advanced one for your personal security.

You need to do everything possible in order to protect yourself from spyware. Identity theft is very real, and for some spyware programs, not very hard to do at all. Protecting yourself with an anti-spyware program ensures that you will not become a victim, and it also keeps your computer running smoothly. Spyware uses the host computer's memory space to run, slowing the computer by a lot if infected.…

Sports and Activities for Young Kids

As a mother of five youngsters, I want them to enjoy their childhood and be active. Getting involved in activities and sports is a time commitment and can sometimes be costly. When our 8 and 6-year-olds expressed interest in playing soccer, we decided it was time to find a team for them to play on. Having previously been involved in a rec league with our oldest two years ago, we weren’t sure we wanted to go that route again.

Many rec leagues are really great and offer reasonably priced sports for area kids to be involved with. Our daughter really enjoyed her rec league but it was a bit more competitive than our 5 year old (at the time) was ready for. She would often begin crying on the field if she missed the ball, and scored 2 goals on their own team the last game of the season. Fortunately she had no clue, and was just so thrilled she scored! I do not have anything bad to say about rec sports, but if your child is not very competitive, or maybe very new to a sport, I think going through leagues like Upward first, is a really awesome choice.

Upward is a national Christian organization, using local churches to facilitate their objectives. It’s a place where kids can learn to play together as a team, learn a new sport (or sharpen skills) and also hear mini Bible lessons during both practices and games. We have found it to be a really neat group and a great blessing to our family.

A program like Upward is a great place to start if you feel like your child may be ready to play team sports. If your child shows real interest and ability in the sport chosen, that’s a great time to decide to move on to a league with more of a time commitment and competitiveness. The next step would be either through your local recreation department or a travel team or higher level team depending on the sport. Whatever the case may be, teaching kids to work together as a team and to get some fun exercise is never a bad thing!

Organizing Computer Files to Cut Computer Clutter

Many home business owners maintain very organized computer filing systems. They're able to find their computer files with just a few keystrokes or clicks of the mouse. Other home business owners aren't as organized. They just save their documents to the desktop or documents folder without having any real organizational system for their computer files. This can lead to lost files, accidental deletion of important files, and an increase in the amount of time it takes to find files on your computer. This article will give you tips on how to organize computer files so that you don't need to spend time wading through groups of files every time you need to locate a document.

Cleaning Computer Files: Before You Begin

Before you begin cleaning computer files, make sure you have enough time set aside to make a dent in what needs to be done. Depending on how many files you have, it may take anywhere from fifteen minutes to several hours to get them under control. If you have a big project ahead of you, break it down into several short sessions to make organizing computer files more manageable. You may also want to jot down some ideas for file categories before you begin creating folders and moving files.

Organizing Computer Files: Cleaning Up Desktop Icons

If you're not paying attention when you install new programs or download files from your e-mail, you could end up with dozens of unused desktop icons that cause computer clutter and make files hard to find. Start your mission to organize your computer files by reviewing all of your desktop icons. If they are shortcuts that you never use, you can delete them. If they are documents that you downloaded, move them to the appropriate folder. Pictures could go in your My Pictures folder and general documents could go in your My Documents Folder. When you're finished, you'll have a clean desktop that will motivate you to continue with organizing computer files.

Cleaning Computer Files: Develop a File System

When you're cleaning computer files, you need to come up with a filing system that works for you. There are a lot of great articles about computer filing systems, but they will not do you any good if you are unable to stick with them. Think about how you typically access files. If you have a home business, you may want to have folders for client work, expenses, and personal projects. Create new folders for each of these topics so that you can easily file your documents.

Organizing Computer Files: Renaming Documents

Sometimes, downloaded documents take on funny names such as ~111.temp.doc. Your files should all be named so that you can quickly find what you are looking for when you search for a file. Take some time to rename your documents according to the file system you set up. A file formerly named "invoice.doc" might be changed to include your client's name or the date of the invoice. Once you have gone through all of your documents and renamed them as necessary, you can move on to the next step in learning how to organize computer files.

Cleaning Computer Files: Filing

Now all that's left for you to do is to move all of your renamed files into your new folders. Client information would go into a folder marked "Clients." Spreadsheets that detail your business expenses, along with scanned copies of expense receipts, would go into the folder marked "Expenses." Continue filing all of your documents until they are all properly categorized.

Once you have cleaned your computer files, resist the temptation to just file your documents anywhere. File them in the proper folders as you save or download them, and you will save a lot of time and frustration when you need to find important documents.…

Classical Music for Spring

Classical Music for Spring - YouTube

Spring: It’s when the world comes back to life. The frost of winter is shaken off and nature blossoms in the warming temperatures. Masters of the Classical music era have tried to capture the magic and beauty of spring and have produced some amazing results. Here is a look at five magnificent examples of Classical era compositions that usher in spring with much due excitement and anticipation.

“Spring” by Antonio Vivaldi

There are few instrumental compositions that can sum up the season of spring better than Antonio Vivaldi did with his “Four Seasons Suite.” In “Spring,” the feeling of the world coming back to life after months of bitter cold and frost is present and undeniable. This song creates imagery of lush fields, meadows, flowers opening the warmth of a spring breeze. The “Spring” portion of the “Four Seasons Suite” is nothing short of spectacular.

“Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach

Another song that beautifully evokes images of spring is “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by Johann Sebastian Bach. Light, airy and upbeat, “Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring” has an ethereal quality to it, and elevates the listener to a more peaceful state. Few composers could compare to the majesty of Johann Sebastian Bach’s majestic gift, and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” is just one example of why.

“Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg

Often called the “Morning Song,” “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1” by Edvard Grieg is a very well-known composition thanks to television and films that have used it as background music. This song easily evokes imagery of a sun rising over a country town, animals rising from a long night’s sleep and the world coming to life after a long slumber.

“Air” by Johann Sebastian Bach

Another magnificent song by Johann Sebastian Bach that easily evokes emotions of spring is the composition “Air.” There could be no more perfect title for this composition. “Air” is a beautiful composition, played with gentle ease, the strings sing with longing and it is a delight to listen to.

“The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Straus II

“The Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Straus II is another well-known composition that has remained popular in modern culture thanks to the film and television industries. Similar to the other compositions noted above, “The Blue Danube Waltz” has a light and airy feel to it – perfect for the season of spring.

Healthy Equations

There are more numbers in fitness than you can shake your booty at.

There are calorie counts, reps and sets, intervals, days per week, scales and weight. It's daunting, but may I introduce a few new equations?

Have you heard of the 90/10 rule? This rule states that, when it comes to weight loss, 90% of the work is accomplished through diet and only 10% is achieved by exercise. There isn't a lot of documented research on this principle, but plenty of experiential evidence. Think about it…

If you eat a Big Mac with cheese, about 700 calories, it will take approximately a 6-7 mile run to burn off those calories. A Big Mac occasionally is absolutely OK, but if you routinely eat a fast food, or unhealthy diet, you will need to practically live in the gym to achieve your weight loss goals.

Who wants to live in the gym anyway? There is so much life to live and time to spend with family and friends and enjoying hobbies. Is a fast food diet really worth the extra work it demands to lose weight? Additionally, no amount of exercise will convert French fries, soda or Snickers into quality, energy efficient nutrients for your body. Even if your tongue isn't, your cells are crying out for fresh fruit, whole grains and veggies. I promise they will reward you if you feed them well.

So, we've established that 90% of weight loss is diet. What about the last 10%? Have you ever heard of skinny-fat? I know you've seen it. This is the "lucky" person with "skinny-genes" who has never attempted a pushup. Her arms dangle from her shirt sleeves like green beans. Or, it's the successful Weight Watchers graduate who happily hit her target weight but wonders why she isn't toned and can't see her triceps.

The final 10% will bring out your biceps, sculpt your shoulders and whittle your middle. You'll never see the lines and definition you desire with out a pushup, squat or jog. If you want 100% success you have to put the two together! The guaranteed success is worth the work!

Is It Normal to Be Superstitious About Sports?

Many people believe in superstitions, and even more people believe in them and don't even know it. Superstitions are a routine or something you follow, because you believe doing that will affect the outcome of something. This is extremely prevalent in sports of all kinds. Many people will wear the same shirt, or sit in the same chair during game time, or even watch the game with the same people all because they are superstitious. They believe that by doing all of this it will help in the outcome of the game they are watching. Is this right however? Is it normal for people to act this way, or is this behavior just lucrative, and crazy?

Like I said before almost everyone does something that makes them superstitious. Some hockey fans have to be wearing the same hat every game, or they feel that their team will not win. Some football fans have to wear the same shirt or even the same pair of underwear for every game. Is this type of behavior normal? The answer is yes, but the real question is does all of this superstitious activity actually do anything. Obviously it doesn't affect the outcome of a game, because the shirt someone wears has nothing to do with the actual game, but is this actually a good thing?

I believe that being superstitious is absolutely a good thing; in fact I think it is a great thing. If being superstitious is what attracts fans to the game, and makes people watch the game then it can only be a great thing. Now obviously anyone can watch the game and not have to be doing something special, but it is this behavior that makes the game a lot better for some people. They enjoy acting the way the do, because they believe that in some way they are helping. They are helping, because they are supporting their team, but that is as far as it goes.

Being superstitious is something that really doesn't make sense, unless you're the person. The acts that you may perform over and over because you believe it will help your team, obviously do nothing. The only thing it does is make you watch and enjoy the game. If that is what it takes, then so be it. If that is what someone needs to do to be able to watch the game and have fun then that is excellent, because for the fans that is what it is all about. Watching, and having fun while supporting your favorite team.…

Plumbing and Independence

He called her from Iraq.

She told him that she planned to fix the toilet.

It had been malfunctioning for months,

even after he had 'repaired' it.

He became irritated,

as he usually did.

He began to berate her,

as he usually did.

"You can't fix that yourself."

"You don't even know what's wrong with it."

"Do you even have any tools?"

She ended the conversation.

She looked carefully at the mechanisms in the toilet tank.

She noted exactly what was wrong.

She drew a diagram.

At the hardware store,

she presented the problem

and was presented

with a replacement kit.

At home, she read the instructions.

She read them again.

She took a break and gathered some tools.

She read the instructions again.

Still baffled, she followed step one.

That was easy enough.

She followed step two.

When the toilet was fully repaired,

and working better than it had in years,

she had a celebratory bowl of ice cream

and wondered

what else she was capable of doing herself.…

The Sport of Kings – Newmarket Horse Racing and the Stuarts

Until the 17th century, the market town of Newmarket, was a quiet community stretching along a Roman highway. Its greatest claim to fame was that the warrior Boudica had lived not far away and had given a good account of herself. Things changed when King James 1st apparently got lost.

James 6th of Scotland and 1st of England.

England's new king was not renowned for his sporting prowess but he took to the hunting field with enthusiasm. In the 21st century it would be difficult to imagine the Queen out riding and then getting lost and left to find her own way home but according to history, James, in pursuit of hares in the fog-covered heathland of Suffolk, lost his way and ended up taking lodgings for the night at an inn named the Griffin. When the mist cleared the following morning, February 28 1605, he learned that he was at a place called Newmarket. So pleased was he with his discovery that he purchased the inn and decided to move there.

The king converted the Griffin into a hunting lodge and also purchased the neighbouring Swan Inn, now the site of Newmarket's Jockey Club. In addition he built himself a palace of sorts so that national business could continue while he was in residence. He spent his years as monarch donating prizes to various race courses and improving the breed of horse. The first recorded race took place at Newmarket in 1622, three years before the king's death.

King Charles 1

James was not a great horse racing man preferring hawking and hunting, but his son Charles, a stutterer, short and with weak legs, was a fearless rider. Having his own place at Newmarket, he frequently took part in matches. At this time it was usual for horses to be matched one against another, a sort of knock out tournament. hard and fast rules were virtually non existent.

Charles is credited with building the first grandstand at Newmarket and two race meetings in the spring and autumn became the norm. It was while he was there that the great portraits by Anthony Van Dyke and Peter Paul Rubens of the king astride enormous horses were painted. By now however, the storm clouds of unrest diverted Charles from sporting activities as seven years of civil war approached. His only return to his palace at Newmarket was as a prisoner.

King Charles II

During his time as Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell suppressed public race meetings fearing that they might become opportunities for royalist gatherings. After 1660 it fell to Charles II to reintroduce them but following the defeat of his father, Newmarket had become a base for disgruntled Parliamentary soldiers and inevitably the palace and other buildings had taken a hammering. Once the palace was restored, Charles II came back to his favourite place with his mistresses to watch his best horses and to ride himself, setting up prizes to encourage competition. He inaugurated the Newmarket Town Plate, a race in which women as well as men could compete. The rules were specific, the race run in heatswith the final taking place "on the second Thursday in October, for ever."

Charles gave his name to one of the two race circuits at Newmarket, the Rowley Mile. The king became known as Old Rowley after the name of the stallion he frequently rode when his runners were being exercised. It had the added barb in that the equine Old Rowley sired many foals.

Queen Mary II and King William III

The short lived reign of Charles's brother James II left little to time for sport and it was not until he was ousted by his niece and her husband, Mary and William of Orange that royal patronage continued. During this time William appointed William Tregonwell Frampton, one of Newmarket's historic eccentrics as Keeper of the King's Running Horses, a position he was to hold for forty years. King William bought promising horses as presents then ironically, he died when his own horse stepped onto a molehill, stumbled and dislodged his royal rider. Jacobite supporters toasted "the little gentleman in the velvet jacket."

Queen Anne

It would be difficult to envy Queen Anne. Daughter of a disgraced king, married to a drunken bore, the Queen endured 17 pregnancies, only four of the babies surviving birth of which only one reached the age of 11 years. Stout and unhealthy herself, horse racing seems an unlikely passion but the Queen kept horses in training at Newmarket. Because of the distance from Windsor Castle however she favoured riding nearer to home at Windsor Great Park and in 1711 she was instrumental in founding a new race course at neighbouring Ascot. Since then, Ascot and Newmarket have been rivals.

The Queen died in 1714, the last of the Stuart monarchs, but breeding horses and horse racing at Newmarket and elsewhere has continued unabated since that time.…

How to Transfer Macintosh Computer Files

How to share files between Mac and Windows 10

Transferring files to and from computers often becomes a daunting and tedious task depending on the data’s characteristics (i.e. file size, number of files, file type, compressing files, etc.). Fortunately for Mac users, there is a plethora of methods to accomplish file transfers. This article will delve into the various categories of file transfers, beggining with the most rapid method and finishing with the slowest method. Despite the speed, each method has its own inherent advantage.

1)Direct Wire/Cord Transfer (i.e. USB Cables, Firewire 400/800, Ethernet, etc.)

Conventionally, taking an ethernet cord and connecting two or more adjacent computers, proves to be the fastest transfer method. Depending on the type of Ethernet cable, it can transfer data from 3 Megabytes/sec – 10 Gigabytes/sec (all of which is variable). The next fastest cord is Firewire 800 which transfers around 800 megabytes/s. Following this is the Firewire 400 cable which transfers data at a rate of approximately 400 megabytes/s. Finally the slowest of the modern computer cables is the USB cable. The USB 2.0 cable is capable of transferring up to 480 megabytes/s. All of these connections require a cord that has a dual sided USB, Firewire, or Ethernet connector so that one end may connect from the host computer to the receiving computer.

Once the cords are connected between the two computers, there are several ways in which the data can be transferred. Perhaps the best method is by booting the receiving computer up in a different manner. Begin by having the receiving computer off and the transferring computer on and running (with the cable of choice connecting the two computers). Boot the receiving computer, and hold down Apple Key + T until the computer has started up. The computer is now in an accessible mode where the host computer can hastily transfer or take files from the newly booted computer.

The file transfer can take place between two regular booted macintosh computers with the use of a third party (FTP or P2P) program. Programs such as Mac Orchard will detect the connection between the two computers and bring up a comprehensive overview of file transfers between the two computers. The advantage of the direct connect method is speed. This proves to be very useful with large files or a variety of files (such as music). The only disadvantage is that the computers can only be as far apart as the cord will reach.

2) Wireless (i.e. Wireless a/b/g/n Router Network, Bluetooth, Online Storage Sites, etc.)

This is the next fastest method of transfer and is quickly overtaking the speed of the direct wire transfer as new technology has been invented. Perhaps the easiest method is connecting two wireless computers onto the same wireless network or signing online from their individual wireless networks. A useful program is AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) where you can create a screenname and sign on, and rapidly transfer data between two computers. Once you have created a screenname and logged in, simply select File–>File Transfer and select the proper files to send to the designated user. The speed of wireless routers varies upon range and type (a/b/g/n) but has a typical range of 50-300megabytes/s. If computers both happen to have bluetooth capabilities, then the transfer can occur within a 30 foot wireless range and a speed of 1 megabyte/s. With Macintosh computers a search for the program within applications or clicking on the Bluetooth Icon in the upper right corner will allow the user to transfer between computers. The advantages of these methods are ease of access, as the wireless methods do not require any connection of cords or transfer of data to any other physical media.

Additionally, many file hosting websites are available online where data can be uploaded and saved to access at a later point in time. Examples of these websites are MediaFire, FileHosting, and RapidShare. The advantages of the online website are when a computer cannot be transported to a different location, the data can be retrieved from another computer via an internet connection.

3) Physical Media (USB Storage Key, CD’s, DVD’s, External Hard drive)

These methods require either a port (USB) or an encoding device (also known as “burner”) to write the media to the disk. USB keys range from holding 40megabytes – 2 Gigabytes, CD’s can hold 700 megabytes, DVD’s can hold 4 Gigabytes – 18 Gigabytes (depending if the DVD and burner has dual layer technology), and external harddrives (typically connect via USB) range from several gigabytes – 3 terabytes. Dual layer technology allows DVD’s to hold almost twice as much data, if your computer is capable of burning dual layer DVD’s. The best reason for this is portability as these devices are typically small or flat and also capable of playing through different media systems besides computers (i.e. DVD player). The only disadvantage is that the storage can be limited and your computer must have the technology to do so.…
